What is Gaadu?

Gaadu, also known as self-abhishek, is a unique and sacred ritual performed in Pandukeshwar. During this ceremony, chosen individuals from the village are believed to be temporarily possessed by the divine energy, serving as a medium between the gods and devotees.

The Five Gaadus

Throughout the year, five major Gaadu ceremonies are performed:

  • Makar Sankranti: The first Gaadu marking the start of the divine cycle
  • Vasant Panchami: Celebrating spring and announcing Badrinath opening date
  • Baisakhi: Marking the opening of Badrinath Temple gates
  • Ashtami Gaadu: Held at Baamni village for purification
  • Baawan Dwadasi: The most revered, performed inside Badrinath sanctum

The Ritual Process

The Gaadu ceremony involves elaborate preparations including fasting, purification, and special prayers. The chosen individual enters a trance-like state and is believed to channel divine messages to the community.

Significance Today

This ancient tradition continues to be an integral part of Pandukeshwar's spiritual heritage, attracting devotees from across India who seek divine guidance and blessings.
